Pink Ribbon and Lace

Drawing #51
Graphite and Gouache

I like drawing  head studies in black and white...especially the backview! When I did my drawing diploma I always enjoyed drawing texture and still do. It's good to just pick up a pencil and paper..not having to clean brushes and palette...keeping it simple!!

Easter Delights

Drawing #50
Graphite and pastel

Cream Easter Eggs...I love them!! These won't last long, I have already eaten some! This is a very big brandy glass and it was 3/4 full before I started drawing...you guessed it...none left now!! I hope you all have a very Happy Easter!

Key Mix

6"x6" Oil on board

This mix of keys were left here by my son when he left to live in Australia. I had put them away and came across them when I was looking for something else... I like painting keys and love the bright green bottle opener!! I am still  working on other small paintings for a gallery and drawing each day ...hope to have time to get more daily works done!!

Drawing #49
Apple Family
Pen and watercolor

I have an apple for lunch most days. These ones are this seasons and look brand new, so while they are looking their best, why not paint a family portrait!!

Hangin' Out

Drawing #48
Pen and watercolor

I must say I had much more fun with these clothes pegs than when I'm hanging out washing! I have a variety  and  some even have faces on them.... I didn't realise until I was sorting through them for this drawing. There maybe a drawing of those later!!!

Limes and Chillies

Drawing # 47
Pen and watercolor
First time I have ever grown limes and these are the first picked... and there are plenty more!! I love Thai food  and use these two ingredients all the time...love the flavour and the colors!!!

Walkway Wildflowers

Drawing #46
Pen and watercolor

The Daily Paintworks challenge this week is about spring. Even though it's autumn in this part of the world these wildflowers come to mind when I think about spring....they are scattered along the side of the path. This is another part of the Estuary walkway where I often walk in the mornings...nice!!

Chillies

Drawing #45
Pen and watercolor

More food! Can't keep away from it...love both eating and painting it! Chillies are another favorite of mine...the bright colors look and taste great in a dish and add a bit of zing!!

Last of the Licorice Allsorts

Drawing #44
Graphite and pastel

I am very late posting this...it was one of THOSE days today!! I never finished a painting I had started yesterday and very nearly didn't finish this drawing...tomorrow will be better!!  This small dish is a favorite of mine and I love licorice allsorts so this was a great combination for me to draw.

Kitchen Glasses

Drawing #43
Graphite and Pastel

Two of my kitchen glasses I have had for about 10 years,  I started out with six and there are now three left! I like the fruit design on them... and because they've been hanging out in the kitchen for such a long time they deserve to be remembered!! Not much painting done this week! I have started three small 6x6 and  hope to get one finished tomorrow!!

Wednesday 20 March 2013

Pears

Drawing #42
Pen and watercolor

These are the green pears I  was going to draw yesterday! I liked the way these were leaning different ways, pear body language  I called it!! Looks like they were trying to avoid each other! Time was a problem today and I needed something simple to draw...these were perfect... obviously I wasn't meant to do them yesterday!!

Tuesday 19 March 2013

Figs

Drawing #41
Pen and watercolor

I bought these figs today and I'm having them for desert tonight...this is not the drawing I had in mind for today, I had some pears set up first.  That happens sometimes... especially if I have been to the market and find fruit I like, it never lasts long so I have to draw or paint it quickly!!

Monday 18 March 2013

Needles and Thread

Drawing #40
Graphite and Gouache

Well I thought I would do a quick drawing today because I was short on time....big mistake!! Even though I took a photo of my bigger needles, enlarged them on my moniter and drew from that, these were not easy. It's  easier to get the shiny look of steel with paint, another good exercise! I can't believe I have done 40 drawings...still a long way to go!

Has Beens

8"x6" Oil on board
SOLD

When my neighbour gave me this bunch of old keys to paint, I told her they were a bunch of 'has beens', so that's how the title for this came about! I like the shadow on the door and I love painting  keys...I have got no idea why they appeal to me, but they do!  I had fun with this one, some were quite rusty and even the cord was old and  faded. I have another one started already...could be a series coming on!!

Drawing #39
Plaits
Graphite and watercolor
This is done from a photo I have had in my files for a long time,  I had thoughts of painting it one day but liked the idea of using graphite....I used a rubber  for the highlights! I am finding all sorts of subjects for my drawings and enjoying the variety, I especially like drawing the back view of figures.

Olives and Brie Cheese

Drawing #38
Pen and watercolor

Late posting this one...had a busy day and went out for dinner tonight...no olives and brie though! I finished a small painting today that I will post tomorrow,  also some of my very late newsletter done! I have painted olives and cheese in oil but this is the first time in watercolor...I prefer the oil but it was a good exercise!

Mini Dahlia

Drawing #37
Graphite and Pastel

I wasn't sure if I wanted to color the petals on this dahlia...after thinking more about it I left it and just added a little in the centre. The petals are so small it would have made life difficult so I took the easy way out!! I have  three paintings blocked in...final stage on one tomorrow..things are looking up! I have had a week of  odd jobs that had to be finished and unfortunately I don't have any maids here to do them!!

Thursday 14 March 2013

Friends

Drawing #36
Pencil and Gouache

I came across these two girls near the Marina sitting on the grass  chatting... I was there to take photos of the boats but ended up sketching and taking photos of them instead!  I like it when that happens! It's completely spontaneous...the boats will always be there but this was too good to miss! I loved drawing them, wondering what they were talking about! I added a bit of color as always!!

Small Change

Drawing #35
Graphite and Pastel

I have this small jar that I keep my small change in. I don't think there has ever been much more in it than this...and certainly never many gold coins! I always need change for parking meters...I'm pretty sure that's where most of it goes!! While there is one or two gold ones in it I thought it would add a bit of color. Drawing the coins gave me grief because of the different angles they are on...not recommended if you want to do a quick drawing!!

Tuesday 12 March 2013

Pink Daisies

Drawing #34
Graphite and pastel
Daily Paintworks FB pick of the day

These pink African Daisies grow in my garden and flower most of the year. They brighten up my studio even if they are only in a tin can! I had these sitting on the bench with strong sunlight coming from behind, with no thought of drawing them! I noticed  the way the  shadow  leads your eye up to the flowers...today's drawing done!!

Monday 11 March 2013

Resting Gull

6"x6" Oil on board
SOLD

This gull knows how to relax!!  I could learn from him... he was very calm sitting in the grass taking in the warm sun and didn't mind me getting close to take photos. I'm not sure but I think he is a young red billed gull.  First daily painting for this week! I had a good day in the studio today, did my drawing and worked on two other paintings...that's how it's supposed to work...let's see if it's the same tomorrow!!

Drawing #33

Lime and Blueberries...Pen and watercolor.  These came from the market, fresh organic blueberries...so delicious! The limes are pretty good too!

Sunday 10 March 2013

Pencils

Drawing # 32
Graphite and Pastel

Some more drawing tools! These are a mix of pencils I also use...some are old, some are new. I find I use the same ones all the time. The silver one is very fine and I use it to begin a drawing. I still have a few other ideas for 'tools of the trade' I can draw, so they will go in my morgue file! I  have two files...one is a folder with ideas and the other is digital photos. Often I will take photos of something I want to paint  in the future, that way I don't forget! I have found these to be very helpful...I know I can find  something when I need to.

Saturday 9 March 2013

Drawing Tools

Drawing #31
Graphite and Pastel

This graphite pencil and drawing pen are two of my drawing tools! I have others but these are the two I seem to use most. The pen is a fine graphite and good for detail...and violet is one of my favorite colors!!

Friday 8 March 2013

Sewing Machine

Drawing #30
Graphite and pastel

One month of my daily drawing gone and so I'm far still enjoying it!  My sewing machine has been sitting on my table for more than a week waiting for me to use it...maybe tomorrow!! I thought at the very least I should draw it.. here it is..so in a different sort of way I have used it!!

Thursday 7 March 2013

Dinner for One

Drawing #29
Graphite and pastel

I only just got this finished....a million things to do today and not enough time! I didn't even get a painting started, the thought was there but it never got any further than that! I enjoyed drawing my spoon and plate (Feb 28th post) so why not try a knife and fork with a dinner plate and a serviette thrown in as well...on a day when my time is short!!!

Wednesday 6 March 2013

Lean on Me

Drawing #28
Pen and watercolor

Back to pen and watercolor! I like to mix things up...a change makes it interesting and stops me getting stuck and bored! I bought these eggplants at the market, they are a beautiful amethyst color,  quite different from the darker ones I usually buy.  I HAD to buy these ones...they look so good and taste good too...love them!!!

Tuesday 5 March 2013

Oil Jar

Drawing #27
Graphite and Pastel

My oil jar sits on my table all the time and I have never painted it!! This was a good opportunity to try it in  graphite instead of oil paint...I am pleased with how it looks and this is another one I will probably paint later on! I like the effects I can get drawing glass with graphite...easier than painting it! I will be getting on with more daily painting now, my shoe ones for the gallery are finished and waiting to be framed...at last!

Monday 4 March 2013

New Paint

Drawing #26
Graphite and Pastel

I bought some new tubes of acrylic paint last week. I love this cadmium red... and opening the new ones before they become all messed up, the paint flows out freely!  I use oils more now but thought I may try these with graphite too. Five more days and I have been daily drawing for a month...it is not as easy as I thought, simply because I still have to be inspired to draw what I like and not just anything!!  I have many more to go and hope to keep up with it!!

Sunday 3 March 2013

Pink Ribbon Keyring

Drawing #25
Graphite and Pastel

Today  it was The Cancer Society Relay for Life here.  My oldest friend lost her battle against the disease at the beginning of the year and another two friends have recently had surgery. They were all in my thoughts today, so this is for them!!

Saturday 2 March 2013

Sauce Bottles

Drawing #24
Graphite and Pastel

I have kept these old sauce bottles in my studio with the idea of painting them one day... I've drawn them for now and  hope to paint them later on!! I like the way only one has a cork, I'm not sure what happened to the other lids...they have been sitting so long I had to brush the dust off them! I find I am looking around for subjects that look good drawn on this mid toned paper! I'm enjoying the way this drawing challenge is making me look at things differently!!

Standing Room

6"x6" Oil on board
SOLD

I came across this gull standing on one of the many rocks along the beach, with just enough standing room to take in the morning sunshine. This is the first painting I have been able to do this week! I have nearly finished three other paintings and managed a drawing every day so all in all not too bad going!! Still have a newsletter waiting to be started!

Drawing #23

Passionfruit....Pen and watercolor.  First passionfruit I have had this year and had to draw them before I ate them!
