A favorite place of mine! This Estuary not far from where I live often has a serene feeling about it late in the evening, hardly a blade of grass moves! I love the peacefulness.

I am happy to get another painting finished after being so busy moving house! It has been a long time. I'm back living in New Zealand after travelling for 10 months around Australia. It feels good to be back where I belong and to walk around the areas I love! This is one of them...the estuary sunbleached grasses!

This marsh grass is along the waters edge of a big Estuary across the road from where we are camping in Australia.The mud is an interesting red earth color. Still not much time for painting but I do what I can!

I found these gumnuts on one of the Eucalyptus trees when I was on my morning walk around the Estuary. My plans of what I was going to paint changed!! It is great finding a subject when you least expect it!

Another one in this small Estuary series! I have had a really mucked up week...wiped one off and another went in the bin. I like to challenge myself and keep learning but this time it went to a new level of frustration! I haven't painted many rocks and I tried to create the atmosphere there was on this morning as well...probably too much to try in one painting. I'm not sure I have done too well but here it is!!!

This is the second in this Estuary series. Often there is lovely cool  light in the mornings....no wind, everything is still, it's my favorite time of the day!! It is a challenge to capture it on a small canvas, not as loose as I would like...good practice though and a study to use for a larger work later on!

Reed Reflections

The first of my Estuary paintings! I never get tired of seeing reeds and their reflections in the water, when it is still  it's almost like looking in a mirror... has a nice calming effect!!

Last Lap

I am on the last lap of finishing my exhibition paintings. I have a kingfisher to do then that's it!! I must say it has been like running a marathon... the reason being, I had two wipe offs and two binned grrrr!! These  photos are a bit fuzzy because the canvas is medium not smooth.  I prefer board anyday!
Our joint exhibition at Quay Gallery Napier is called "Coastal Impressions" so my pieces feature Estuary landscapes and birds that live there. I love the area...I see this landscape and the birds nearly every day when I walk my dog.

Works in Progress

Thought I would post a couple of  works in progress as I've not had time to paint any small ones this week. The image is dark because I had to take the photo inside.
These  paintings of the Estuary are going to be part of my exhibition at Quay Gallery in October. It is good to be painting landscapes again... such a lovely place with beautiful light.

It's been a long time since I have done large work...there is still quite a bit of work to be done before they are finished and there are another two or three after that.

Halfway Mark

I am halfway with my exhibition paintings, these seabird ones are finished and now I have four landscapes to do! All paintings are from around the Estuary across the road from where  I live.
There are Kingfishers and Herons around the area too but so far I haven't had any luck getting photos, they don't hang around for long enough. 

I have wanted to do this for a long time so when the opportunity to have a joint exhibition in October with another friend came up I couldn't refuse....I have been painting small for nearly four years so this has inspired me to do bigger ones again and I am enjoying it!!

I have been working on paintings for two exhibitions next month. These three, 12x12in are the first to leave my studio! They will be showing in the Quay Gallery Christmas sale opening on  the 1st Dec.

All paintings in the exhibition are 12x12in. 

I decided to have a bit of a theme and because I live so close to an Estuary I have painted pretty much what I see each day!! These are my favorite coastal birds!

These geese did not want any more photos! I was taking some of them swimming over in the Estuary...they put up with me being there for a while, then just turned and waddled off. Ha! I won out. I actually liked this with the bit of attitude better than when they were in the water!!

Color on a Gray Day

I love the Agapanthus flower...I took this photo on a gray day when I was walking around the Estuary. There are a few of these growing along the walkway and they add such lovely color.  I loved the blue against the gray sky background!!
I'm a bit slow on the painting again...been too busy clearing out 'stuff ' so we can sell the house, I hope that will change soon!!

I had time to do one more painting before I go on holiday...love the colors of the grass in the Estuary at this time of year, especially  the mornings! I will be away for two weeks, so won't be posting any paintings..... I hope to meet  up with an artist blog friend  Wendy Barrett in Perth Australia... then will be relaxing with my family in the warm sun over there...can't wait!!!

Out of all the birds that inhabit the Estuary, the little kingfisher has to be my most favorite. Their color is beautiful...not as bright as I thought but still lovely. The color here looks better in person. There were 4 or 5 perched on this line and I managed to get a few good photos before they flew away! I will be painting more!!

Our first month of winter is nearly over!! We have had some nice days this last week and I have been walking around the Estuary in the mornings. It will always be one of my  favorite places...love the cool winter light!!

We had beautiful warm weather at Easter and this girl took advantage of  it!  She was taking time out lying in the sun on the Estuary reserve across the road from my place. The light on her hair and the empty coke bottle caught my attention...I loved drawing this and I think I will end up painting it in oil!!

The Daily Paintworks challenge this week is about spring. Even though it's autumn in this part of the world these wildflowers come to mind when I think about spring....they are scattered along the side of the path. This is another part of the Estuary walkway where I often walk in the mornings...nice!!
