On the Easel

This is one of the larger paintings I am working on. It's not often I take photos of work in progress, simply because I get engrossed in painting and  forget!! The  image  isn't  that great because of the light in my studio. I am working on the geese at the moment..... lots of value and temperature changes before it's anywhere near finished! I have another three beside the easel blocked in ready to go when this is done. I followed these geese around for about an hour trying to get a decent photo so I have to make this a good one!!!

2015 Calendar

My calendar for 2015!!  "Fun with Food Paintings" I DID have fun setting up and painting these! I have not ordered a big amount  because I'm not sure how many will sell. If you would like to buy one, you can email me and I will send you a paypal invoice.

Busy Practising

Because I have limited space and time until my studio is built, I haven't been painting as much and all I have done are small ones....so I  thought now might be a good time to step out of my comfort zone and try some figurative work! I've always loved it but never pursued it.There is a certain amount of unease in doing this but I guess it has to be good for me in the long run! I have been learning from Peggi Kroll Roberts video 'Translations from a Photo'. I think it will keep me going for quite a while, it is so interesting and lots of learning to be done!!

Early Evening Sky

Today it is two years since my first blog entry and I have enjoyed every minute of it! I have made so many friends and been inspired by all the wonderful art I see by following their blogs!! It has also made me  commit to regular painting and  helped me develop the skills to grow. To celebrate and say a BIG thank you to everyone I am giving this 6x8in painting  away! This is a view from my studio window one spring evening...and in three days time it's the end of winter here!!

This scene is part of the Estuary close to where I live. If you follow my blog you will know this is a favorite place of mine to paint! There are so many different views and I pretty much love them all! I have been wanting to share my painting process, but always forget to take the photos of each step. Leslie Saeta set us this task in the 30 day marketing challenge...so  here it is!!

My Painting Process

1. I  begin  my paintings by blocking in shapes to establish my composition...keeping it simple, no details, just shapes and values to see where my darks and lights will be.

2.  I then lay in areas of color to each of the value planes paying attention to the temperature relationships between the planes. Next I start using intermediate values, making sure the shifts are subtle. Once they are all working I can add details and highlights to the tree and grass in the foreground.

A good book to help you approach this is  Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting by John Carlson.
